Teaching Twice Exceptional Learners in Today’s Classroom

REGISTER

Description

Join us Friday mornings in August for the launch of the Coffee Shop!

We’ll gather virtually  to explore Emily Kircher Morris’s book, Teaching Twice Exceptional Learners in Today’s Classroom. According to the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) the term “twice-exceptional,” also referred to as “2e,” is used to describe gifted children who, have the characteristics of gifted students with the potential for high achievement and give evidence of one or more disabilities as defined by federal or state eligibility criteria. These disabilities may include specific learning disabilities (SpLD), speech and language disorders, emotional/behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, autism spectrum, or other impairments such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

It is not often well-known or well-understood that students who are gifted may also have a disability— just as students with disabilities may also be gifted (referred to as “masking”).  Twice-exceptional students can be misunderstood, disciplined, underchallenged and left behind.

Join our coffee talks where we will dive into Emily’s book to identify ways to support twice-exceptional learners and interventions that will unmask the potential of all learners within inclusive classrooms.

Together we will look at:

  • Using students’ strengths to support their struggles.
  • Bringing students into the process with strategies for self-awareness and self-advocacy.
  • Understanding that gradual progress is expected – struggles don’t appear overnight and building compensatory skills takes time.
  • Strategies to help you take a team approach with colleagues and bridge gaps between general, special, and gifted classrooms
