Kids listening to teacher during an elementary school lesson

All states require that people earn a certificate before they can teach in public schools. The certification process ensures that teachers meet certain standards in their subject areas, pass required background checks, and use current teaching methods. The state of Washington requires certificates for teachers, administrators, and educational staff associates (ESAs). The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) issues certificates through the E-Certification application.
