Rachel StendahlCapital Region ESD 113’s Rachel Stendahl is the recipient of the 2021 Green Medalist Award from EarthGen. The award recognizes teams and individuals for their accomplishments in leadership, resiliency, equity, and inclusion.

Scott Killough, ESD 113’s Regional Science Administrator, nominated Stendahl for the award for her adjudicated youth environmental science program for Lewis County and Thurston County Detention Centers. On average, in each visit Rachel reaches 8 to 12 middle and high school-aged students at the detention centers. She has been able to continue to serve students, even through the pandemic.

This group of students represents some of our region’s most marginalized population,” says Killough. “Without this program, students in the detention centers would only learn science through packets with no actual hands-on experiences.”

Congratulations Rachel!
