New Superintendent Announced

Flip Herndon

TUMWATER — March 31, 2023 — The Capital Region Educational Service District 113 (ESD 113) board of directors is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Lester “Flip” Herndon as their next superintendent, pending successful contract negotiations. Dr. Herndon will assume his new role on July 1, 2023.

Dr. Herndon is an accomplished educator with extensive experience in K-12 education. He is currently the superintendent of Tukwila School District, where he has served since 2018. He is the first Black superintendent of an educational service district in Washington.

In his new role as ESD superintendent, Dr. Herndon will work closely with the board and staff to continue the agency’s mission of ensuring excellent and equitable education for all students through service and collaboration. He will focus on strengthening partnerships, promoting innovation, and ensuring that students have access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.

Departing superintendent, Dr. Dana Anderson, shared, “Flip is well-known for his commitment to improving student outcomes, fostering collaboration and communication, and promoting equity and inclusion in education.”
