Bicycle Education

The statewide school-based Let’s Go Bicycle Education Program is a multi-week bicycle curriculum for students in grades 3–8 that meets Washington’s Health & PE standards.

Taught in classrooms during PE, this program is part of the Move Ahead Washington transportation bill, funded by the Washington State Department of Transportation, and administered by Cascade Bicycle Club in partnership with the AESD Network. It aims to improve bicycle confidence for transportation and recreation; establish an understanding of bicycle, pedestrian, and traffic safety; increase regional safety of transportation and communities; and increase competency in state PE standards.

The program was established in 2016 in Seattle and is modeled after Cascade Bicycle Club’s flagship “Let’s Go” curriculum. It is set to expand statewide to reach 90% of Washington students by 2039.

Participating schools receive:

  • Free one-day professional development for PE teachers (clock hours available)
  • Three-week curriculum on bike safety for grades 3–8
  • Loaner bikes and bike trailer delivery
  • 30 bikes per trailer (adaptive trikes are provided)
  • A trailer that stays on site for daily bike storage
  • Helmets, hairnets, and in-class support
  • An exciting new program that can be run in a school gym or outdoors
