Since its inception in 2011, the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) has worked to reduce barriers to education and training for Washington State residents working towards a career in a STEM or health care profession. WSOS offers two different types of scholarships: one for students seeking a bachelor’s degree, and one for students seeking career and technical education at a community or technical college.
The Career and Technical Scholarship offers up to $1,500 to students each quarter for the duration of their associate degree, certificate or apprenticeship program. Like the Baccalaureate scholarship, funding from this scholarship can also be used to assist with housing, transportation, food, etc. Applications for the Career and Technical Scholarship are open from January 13, 2020 through February 6, 2020.
For the last several years, WSOS has expanded educational opportunities for underserved Washington residents. Of their last Baccalaureate cohort, 61% of their scholars are women, 64% are students of color, and 65% are first-generation college students. WSOS is on track to serve 20,000 students by the year 2025, resulting in high-demand, high-paying Washington jobs going to skilled Washington residents.
